Black pot: Potclays Craft Crank clay, fired in a wood-fired kiln with reduction cooling (see here). White pot: Mixed clay with added fine sand, decorated with porcelain slip and fired in an electric kiln. Brown pot: Solargil natural clay 58310ST, fired in a wood-fired kiln with a little salt (see here). Light/beige pot: Cebex cs900, fired in a wood-fired kiln with oxidation cooling (see here).

Throwing vases off the hump might not be the first technique you will try, but once you get to grips with the basics you will go on to learn how to collar the clay and use a throwing stick. Hold the throwing stick firmly with your left hand to bulge out the body. The right hand supports the top of the pot so that it doesn’t wobble off centre.
